Chestnut Hill, Mass- The No. 24 team in the country Wake Forest got a little scare from Boston College to stay undefeated 27-24 at Alumni Stadium. Despite 508 yards of offense, and a 159-yard day from AJ Dillon, the Eagles couldn’t capitalize when they needed to.
Deacon Demon quarterback Jamie Newman completed 21 of 33 passes for 243 yards and was picked off once. He also ran for 102 yards and kept the chains moving with his ability to scramble for extra yards.
“We battled all the way to the end, even on the last play when we crossed midfield with that end of the game play. Kids had steel resolve. Fought over the course of the game. We had over 530 something yards of offense in that game. We rushed for 250 yards. Our total offense, our total yardage throwing, our total yardage rushing, you know, we outperformed.” Eagles coach Steve Addazio said.
The first drive was setup by an errant throw from Anthony Brown which was picked off on BC’s opening possession, the Deacons put together a complete drive, 11 plays for 57 yards, capped off by a 5 yard touchdown run by Cade Carney.
Boston College overcame an early 10-point deficit to tie the game heading into the break, and they trailed by three points with 6:39 remaining in the game, but the Demon Deacons’ ability to possess the ball and make timely plays was the difference in the ball game.
On offense, the Eagles had plenty of opportunities to put the ball in the endzone. Early in the second quarter, trailing 10-0, BC had a chance to score, but Kobay White dropped a pass on third down and the Eagles had to settled for a field goal.
In need of a big play and a spark, Dillon broke for a 33-yard run, while an 18-yard carry by Zay Flowers on the next play had BC in scoring position. Facing 4th and 3, Brown rolled right and threw back across the field to a wide-open Jake Burt for a first down. But Kobay White couldn’t bring in a pass on 3rd and goal from the 5-yard line, and BC had to settle for an Aaron Boumerhi 22-yard field goal to cut the lead 10-3.
The Eagles made some adjustments and the defense got their first stop of the game, aided by a sack from Max Richardson. The offense went to work but the Eagles needed just 6 plays to go 85 yards. Brown found Zay Flowers in the endzone from 26 yards out to tie the score at 10.
Jamie Newman wasn’t finished for the day on 3rd and 1 from the Wake’s 29, he called his own number and took it 50 yards into BC territory. Wake Forest retook the lead shortly thereafter, when Newman hooked up with Sage Surratt on a 6-yard fade route in the endzone.
BC answered back with a huge kick return by Travis Levy giving them the ball at the Deacs 48.
