Philadelphia, PA—-In a surprising move during the 2025 NFL Draft, the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles traded up to select Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell with the 31st overall pick. This marked the franchise’s first first-round selection of an off-ball linebacker since taking Jerry Robinson in 1979.

The Eagles moved up just one spot, swapping picks with the Kansas City Chiefs and throwing in a fifth-rounder to secure Campbell—highlighting just how determined they were to land him.

At just 21 years old, Campbell brings an elite mix of size, speed, and athleticism to the Eagles defense. His draft stock reflected his immense potential, as he ranked 12th on Daniel Jeremiah’s board, 14th for Dane Brugler, and 21st for Mel Kiper.

While primarily playing off-ball linebacker at Alabama, Campbell also saw snaps off the edge, showcasing his versatility. In the 2024 season, he recorded 64 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and an interception—impacting games at every level of the field.

General Manager Howie Roseman explained the rationale behind the trade-up, noting the flurry of late-first-round movement among teams: “We didn’t want to risk missing out. He was our guy,” Roseman said. “He’s explosive, can line up inside or off the edge, and we’re thrilled to bring him back to Philly.”

Head coach Nick Sirianni echoed those sentiments, praising Campbell’s relentless energy and elite speed. He emphasized that Campbell’s motor and versatility align perfectly with the Eagles’ defensive identity.

Roseman added that while the team is confident in its current linebacker and edge groups, Campbell brings a dynamic element. Though he didn’t commit to where Campbell would begin his NFL journey, Roseman referenced successful transitions of players from linebacker to edge roles under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, pointing to the staff’s experience with developing hybrid defenders.

While drafting local players can sometimes come with off-field distractions, Roseman credited security chief Dom DiSandro for offering trusted insights into prospects’ backgrounds and families—ensuring the Eagles are prepared to support Campbell as he begins his pro career.
