New York, NY—In recent weeks, speeches by Jamie Foxx and Tyler Perry have ignited a powerful conversation about the role of Black voices in media, representation, and the necessity of owning our narratives. Their passionate words were not just emotional tributes or celebratory moments—they were clarion calls for change. They reminded us why it’s essential for Black publications and independent media to speak boldly, unapologetically, and without compromise.

Tyler Perry, a long-standing advocate for Black ownership, famously said, “While you’re fighting for a seat at the table, I’ll be down in Atlanta building my own.” That philosophy is not just a personal success story; it’s a blueprint for a future where access is no longer begged for but built. Jamie Foxx, too, in his powerful appearances, has emphasized the value of community, authenticity, and using platforms to uplift truth, especially in spaces that historically silence Black excellence unless it serves a commercial interest.

Their words carry weight because they reflect a troubling reality: mainstream institutions, including the NFL, NBA, NCAA, and MLB, continue to show patterns of exclusion and gatekeeping when it comes to Black and independent publications. These leagues profit immensely from Black talent—on the field, on the court, and in their marketing—but often shut out Black voices from the media rooms and decision-making tables.

The Hypocrisy of Access:

Let’s be clear: the contributions of Black athletes are foundational to American sports culture. Yet Black journalists, bloggers, podcasters, and independent outlets are routinely denied access, credentialing, and inclusion. This discrimination is not only unfair—it’s strategic. When mainstream institutions control the narrative, they control the image, the legacy, and ultimately, the business of Black excellence.

If these leagues continue to block Black publications from covering events, asking tough questions, and telling stories from our own perspective, then it’s time to stop begging for inclusion in a system built to exclude us. We cannot continue to wait for validation from institutions that profit off our culture but deny us access to the platforms that shape it.

The Solution Is Ownership:

The future lies in ownership—media platforms that we control, stories that we tell, and institutions that answer to us. Tyler Perry did not wait for Hollywood to accept him. He created a studio that now rivals the legacy institutions. Jamie Foxx has consistently used his platform to champion independent voices and elevate unfiltered truth.

Black athletes, influencers, and cultural leaders must take notice. If the establishment won’t provide the space, then the only answer is to create one. Not only for the next Tyler Perry or Jamie Foxx—but for the countless talented, truth-telling Black writers, editors, videographers, and storytellers who deserve the mic.

A Call to Action:

This is more than a media issue—it’s a cultural and economic justice issue. Black stories matter. Black perspectives are vital. And Black media is essential.

To the NFL, NBA, NCAA, and MLB: If you continue to shut out Black publications, we will not plead. We will not wait. We will build. And when the stories are finally told, it will be clear who stood on the right side of history.

As Jamie Foxx and Tyler Perry remind us, it’s not about being allowed to speak—it’s about making sure our voices are never silenced again.
