EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — The UConn Huskies opened their 2025 season in dominant fashion, cruising to a 59–13 blowout over Central Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field.

Quarterback Joe Fagnano led the charge, tossing three touchdown passes and running for another to spearhead a first-half explosion that saw the Huskies put up 35 points before the break.

Fagnano Finds His Rhythm

Making his season debut, Fagnano looked sharp from the outset. The senior quarterback completed 18 of 25 passes for 260 yards, finishing with four total touchdowns and a 72% completion rate before exiting in the third quarter.

He connected twice with Skyler Bell, including a highlight-reel 80-yard touchdown that helped ignite the UConn offense. Bell led all receivers with two scores on the day, flashing deep-threat ability that CCSU couldn’t match.

UConn Answers Early Setback

Despite the lopsided final score, it was the visiting Blue Devils who struck first. A mishandled snap on a UConn punt gave CCSU the ball deep in Huskies territory, and Elijah Howard punched in a 2-yard touchdown run to put the underdogs ahead 7–0.

Cam Edwards Breaks Loose

Running back Cam Edwards electrified the home crowd with a 73-yard touchdown dash, part of a 115-yard performance on just six carries. His long score flipped the momentum back in UConn’s favor and helped open the floodgates.

Evers Closes It Out

With the game well in hand, backup quarterback Nick Evers entered late in the third quarter and kept the offense rolling. He added a touchdown pass of his own, further extending UConn’s lead and giving the Huskies a glimpse at their quarterback depth.

Blue Devils Struggle to Keep Pace

Central Connecticut had few answers once UConn got rolling. Quarterback Brady Olson completed just 8 of 19 passes for 118 yards, while Howard added 59 rushing yards and the team’s lone touchdown. The Blue Devils were outmatched on both sides of the ball, dropping to 0–5 all-time against UConn.

Since moving to the FBS in 2002, UConn has gone 22–2 against FCS opponents, continuing that dominance with Saturday’s win.

Looking Ahead

UConn will look to build on the momentum as they prepare for their Week 2 opponent.

Central Connecticut will regroup and aim to bounce back next weekend.
