Iowa City, Iowa — With a dominant performance Saturday night, Iowa defeated Massachusetts 47‑7 — and in doing so, Kirk Ferentz became the winningest coach in Big Ten history, earning his 206th career win and surpassing Woody Hayes.

Freshman quarterback Mark Gronowski accounted for three touchdowns (two through the air, one on the ground), while playmaker Kaden Wetjen also found the end zone twice — including a game‑changing 95‑yard punt return that crushed any momentum UMass had left.

Offensive Highlights

Gronowski, who transferred from South Dakota State, opened the scoring early by connecting with Seth Anderson on two passing touchdowns — from 20 yards and 3 yards out. He capped the first half with a 13‑yard rushing touchdown just before halftime to put Iowa up 30‑7.

Wetjen contributed a 20‑yard end‑around in the first quarter and then tied an Iowa program record with a 95‑yard punt return for a touchdown early in the third. (KCCI)

Kicker Drew Stevens made field goals from 54 and 27 yards. Backup QB Hank Brown also threw a 2‑yard TD pass to KJ Parker late in the fourth quarter. (KCCI)

Defensive Control & Game Flow

Iowa’s defense severely limited UMass throughout the evening, holding the Minutemen to just 119 total yards. UMass managed zero rushing yards in the first half on 16 carries.

Gronowski and Iowa started fast, scoring on multiple opening drives and building a comfortable lead by halftime. Wetjen’s punt return TD in the third quarter essentially sealed the game.

Milestones & Reflections

With this victory, Kirk Ferentz claimed the title of Big Ten coach with the most wins.

The win also set the tone for Iowa as they transition from non‑conference matchups to tougher Big Ten play.

Injury & Other Notes:

During Wetjen’s punt return, Massachusetts junior cornerback TJ Magee suffered a frightening injury and was carted off. Replays showed a hit that caused Magee’s head to snap back. He was immobilized and taken to the hospital; officials later reported that he was alert and moving his extremities.

What’s Ahead:

UMass will try to rebounded when they face Missouri on Sept. 27.

Iowa, now 2‑1, begins Big Ten play next week by visiting Rutgers.
