Queens, NY—Amanda Anisimova delivered one of the biggest surprises of the U.S. Open so far, defeating world No. 2 Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to her first semifinal in New York.
The win comes just weeks after Anisimova suffered a devastating 6-0, 6-0 loss to Swiatek in the Wimbledon final—a match that lasted under an hour and left the American visibly emotional during the post-match ceremony. This time, the 24-year-old flipped the script entirely.
Seeded No. 8, Anisimova played with power and precision inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, never allowing Swiatek to find her rhythm. She surpassed the number of points she won in the entire Wimbledon final midway through the opening set and remained composed throughout, despite the high-stakes atmosphere.
Born in New Jersey and raised in Florida, Anisimova is now into her third career Grand Slam semifinal, but it’s her first at Flushing Meadows. With Wednesday’s win, she showed just how far she’s come since that tough loss in London.
“I just tried to stay focused and stick to my game plan,” Anisimova said after the match. “I knew I had to be aggressive and take my chances. I’m really proud of how I handled the moment.”
Swiatek, the 2022 U.S. Open champion and a six-time major winner, struggled to counter Anisimova’s depth and pace from the baseline. The Pole’s trademark consistency wavered under pressure, and she was broken four times in the match.
Anisimova will now face either Naomi Osaka or Karolina Muchova in the semifinals on Thursday as she continues her quest for a first Grand Slam title — and perhaps a shot at redemption after falling short at Wimbledon.
