Tempe, Ariz. — Arizona State’s relentless defense stole the show as the Sun Devils pulled away in the second half to defeat Eastern Washington 73–58 on Saturday afternoon, improving to 2–0 on the young season.
ASU’s defense set the tone early, contesting nearly every shot and forcing the Eagles into uncomfortable possessions throughout. But it wasn’t until after halftime that the Sun Devils’ offense caught fire — turning a tight first half into a commanding win. Arizona State held Eastern Washington to just two field goals in the third quarter while outscoring them by 14 points to take full control.
“In the first half, they came out with more energy than we did,” said guard Jyah Lovett, who scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. “But we regrouped, stayed locked in, and knew what we had to do.”
Elliott Hits Milestone as ASU Finds Its Rhythm
Senior guard Gabby Elliott once again led by example, scoring 15 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting night while adding two blocks and surpassing 1,000 career points in the process. After a stellar opener that included 16 points and seven steals, Elliott continued to shine as one of ASU’s most reliable two-way players.
Meanwhile, Marley Washenitz contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, and freshman Amaya Williams, starting in place of injured point guard Last-Tear Poa, delivered an impressive debut performance with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
“When you lose someone like Poa, it’s about who steps up,” head coach Molly Miller said. “For a freshman to come in, score in double digits, and play with that kind of poise — that’s huge. The worst thing that can happen is to have your number called and not be ready. Amaya was ready.”
Defense Defines the Game
Arizona State’s trademark pressure defense overwhelmed Eastern Washington. The Sun Devils forced 22 turnovers and turned them into 19 points, while committing just 11 themselves. Washenitz and McKinna Brackens combined for six of ASU’s 11 steals, helping limit EWU’s offense to 35% shooting from the field.

“Our defense really drove the momentum,” Miller said. “We worked on some specific things in practice this week, and you could see that carry over. But we’re still a long way from where we want to be — there’s a lot of work ahead.”
Injury Update: Poa’s Status Unclear
Fifth-year guard Last-Tear Poa, who transferred from LSU and led the team with 10 assists in the season opener, missed the game after injuring her left hand earlier in the week. Her hand was wrapped on the sideline, and she saw a doctor during halftime.
“I’m anxious to get the report,” Miller said. “Her return will depend on these next few days.”

With their defense locked in and their depth stepping up, the Sun Devils appear poised to keep building momentum — even as they await the return of their veteran floor general.
