Bronx, NY — In a classic pitcher’s duel at Yankee Stadium, Brayan Bello delivered a masterful performance Friday night, throwing seven scoreless innings of three-hit baseball to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees and secure the season series against their longtime rivals.

With the victory, Boston (7-1 vs. New York this year) leapfrogged the Yankees by a half-game in the race for the American League’s first wild card spot. The Red Sox haven’t lost to the Yankees since June 6.

Bello (10-6) was sharp from the start, allowing just four baserunners across seven innings. He gave up singles to Ben Rice, Trent Grisham, and Austin Wells, but worked efficiently to keep New York off the scoreboard. A key moment came in the third inning, when Bello induced a double play from Rice to erase Grisham’s leadoff single. In the sixth, Wells was caught off first base after Grisham lined out, killing another potential rally.

The game’s only run came in the seventh inning. After Nathaniel Lowe doubled off reliever Mark Leiter Jr. (5-7), Connor Wong followed with an RBI double to put Boston ahead for good.

Making his MLB debut, Red Sox rookie Jhostynxon Garcia went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and a walk. His at-bat in the fourth inning was briefly interrupted when a squirrel darted across the field, momentarily halting play.

The Yankees, who had been riding a five-game win streak, dropped their second straight to Boston and now trail first-place Toronto by 5.5 games in the AL East. Friday marked the ninth time this season that New York has been shut out.

Max Fried was strong in a no-decision for the Yankees, tossing six shutout innings with seven strikeouts. He allowed four hits and walked three over 99 pitches.

Key Moments:

Garrett Whitlock struck out Giancarlo Stanton on three pitches with a runner aboard to end the eighth.

Aroldis Chapman closed it out in the ninth with two strikeouts, recording his 25th save of the season.

Stat of the Night:

The Yankees were held to three hits or fewer for the ninth time in 2025. By comparison, they were limited to that number only six times last season.

Next Up:

The series continues Saturday afternoon as Boston’s Garrett Crochet (13-5, 2.43 ERA) faces off against Yankees rookie Will Warren (7-5, 4.25 ERA).
