New Jersey Mike’s Arena—-The Nebraska women’s basketball team secured its first road win of the season on Sunday, defeating Rutgers 69-62 in Piscataway, New Jersey. The victory came despite the absence of redshirt junior guard Allison Weidner, who likely suffered a season-ending knee injury during practice on Saturday.

At halftime, Nebraska held a 36-31 lead over Rutgers. Freshman Britt Prince paced the Huskers with 11 points, while Rutgers’ standout guard Kiyomi McMiller kept the Scarlet Knights in the game with 17 first-half points. Despite shooting 40% (4-of-10) from three-point range in the first half, Rutgers struggled on the boards, getting out-rebounded 31-15.

In the third quarter, Rutgers mounted a comeback. They trimmed Nebraska’s lead to four points (42-38) with 4:58 left and tied the game at 42-42 at the 3:30 mark. The Scarlet Knights briefly took a 44-42 lead after McMiller hit a jumper in the lane and a floater from the right elbow. The quarter ended with the score knotted at 48-48.

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but Prince took control for Nebraska, scoring key points to secure the win and extinguish Rutgers’ hopes of a comeback.

Weidner, who has faced significant adversity in her career, was lost for the 2022-23 season after tearing her left ACL in December 2022. She suffered another ACL tear, this time in her right knee, during October 2023 practice, just ahead of the current season. On Wednesday, she had delivered her best performance of the year, pouring 11 points and six assists in a victory over No. 20 Michigan State.

Nebraska (13-4, 4-2 Big Ten) struggled from beyond the arc on Sunday, hitting just 3-of-22 three-point attempts (13.6%). Overall, the Huskers shot 41% (25-of-61) from the field, while Rutgers (8-9, 0-6 Big Ten) shot 35.5% (22-of-62) and 30% (6-of-20) from three-point range.

Prince led Nebraska with 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while Alexis Markowski contributed a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards. McMiller delivered an outstanding performance for Rutgers, scoring 33 points, including five three-pointers, on 14-of-28 shooting. However, Nebraska’s dominance on the glass proved to be a decisive factor, as they out-rebounded Rutgers 49-32 for the game.

The Huskers will face Iowa in Iowa City on Thursday in their next matchup.
