Munich, Germany — Eddy Pineiro’s 36-yard field goal in overtime lifted the Carolina Panthers to their second straight victory this season, edging past the New York Giants 20-17 on Sunday in Germany.
The Giants (2-8) won the overtime coin toss but stumbled on the first play when rookie running back Tyrone Tracy fumbled. Carolina’s Josey Jewell recovered the ball at the Giants’ 23-yard line, setting up Pineiro’s game-winning kick for the Panthers (3-7).
“I just didn’t secure it right,” Tracy admitted. “I was trying to make a move and got in a hole. That’s on me, and I have to live with it. I hold myself to a high standard, so it’s tough.”
Defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson, a former Giant, forced the critical fumble. Known for his passion for soccer, Robinson said the energy of Munich’s historic stadium fueled him.
“It was a thrill, everything I wanted,” Robinson said. “I’d told the guys, ‘If I get a chance to end it, I will.’ And I did.”
The Giants overcame a 17-7 deficit in the fourth quarter, with Graham Gano’s 42-yard field goal tying the game with 5 seconds left in regulation. Gano, returning from a hamstring injury, missed an earlier 43-yard attempt.
Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard, fresh off a reported $33.2 million contract extension, carried 28 times for 153 yards and a touchdown. Rookie quarterback Bryce Young completed 15 of 25 passes for 126 yards, including a first-quarter touchdown to Ja’Tavion Sanders. This marks the first time in Young’s NFL career—and the first time since late last season—that Carolina has won back-to-back games.
Carolina’s recent wins have come down to clutch moments, as the Panthers edged the New Orleans Saints 23-22 last week with Hubbard’s late touchdown.
Coach Dave Canales praised his team’s resilience. “I’m really proud of this group and how we finish,” he said.
The Panthers head into a bye week before facing the Kansas City Chiefs, the reigning Super Bowl champions. Canales, who previously benched Young for Andy Dalton, acknowledged the rookie’s progress.
“Bryce is showing us he’s improving each week. Today could’ve been fantastic, but he’s definitely making a case,” Canales remarked.
For the Giants, Daniel Jones completed 22 of 37 passes for 190 yards but threw two interceptions. Tracy ran 18 times for 103 yards and a touchdown.
Jones led a fourth-quarter comeback, capping a 96-yard drive with a 2-yard rushing touchdown to narrow Carolina’s lead to 17-14. Later, his 12-play drive set up Gano’s game-tying field goal to force overtime.
The Panthers took an early 10-0 lead with a 53-yard field goal by Pineiro and Young’s touchdown pass. Tracy’s 32-yard touchdown run got the Giants on the scoreboard in the third quarter, but Hubbard’s 1-yard touchdown restored Carolina’s 17-7 advantage heading into the fourth.
