Connecticut Sun Takes Down Washington Mystics At Mohegan Sun 80-74

Uncasville, Conn. —The Connecticut Sun (2-0) were led by DeWanna Bonner, who scored a season-high 21 points, three boards, two assists, and two swipes in the 80-74 victory over the Washington Mystics (1-1) Sunday.

Washington jumped out to a 24-14 lead in the first quarter frame. The Sun struggled couldn’t buy a bucket in the opening ten minutes shooting just 27.8% (5-18) from the hardwood, while the Mystics shot 47.1% (8-17) from the court. Tiffany Hayes got it going in the first scoring six points.

Alyssa Thomas came on late and scored 14 points, collected 16 rebounds along with six assists and three steals to help the Sun rally from a 12-point deficit early.

The Sun found their offensive groove in the second, outscoring Washington, 20-14 in the quarter, to trail by just four at the break, 38-34.

Bonner poured ten of her 21 points in the second quarter to take a small lead into the locker room. Brionna Jones picked up a crucial third foul with 5:32 remaining in the first half to sideline her until the half.

Jones added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the game.

The Sun dominated the third quarter, they outscored Washington, 23-20, to trim the lead to one point, 58-57, heading into the fourth. Jones and Thomas went to work in that frame each scoring five points to lead the Sun in scoring out of the break.

Connecticut opened up the fourth on a 10-2 run to take a 67-60 lead with 5:59 remaining in the contest. The Mystics wouldn’t go away quietly went a quick 5-0 run on their own to cut the Sun’s lead, 67-65, with 4:00 to go in the contest. But, the Sun finished the game on a 13-9 spurt to secured the win.

The Mystics was led by Shakira Austin, who poured in 21 points, 11 boards, two assists, and one block.

Connecticut shot 25-68 (36.8%) from the floor, while Washington went 27-69 (39.1%) from the field. Elena Delle Donne had 19 points and also had 11 boards for the Mystics (1-1).

Delle Donne, a two-time WNBA MVP, missed a open look in the paint that would’ve made it a one-possession game with 37 ticks left and then fouled out seconds later.

Stats:

With 10 boards in the game, Brionna Jones surpassed the 700 career-rebound mark (705).

With six boards in today’s game, Rebecca Allen surpassed the 400 career-rebound mark (403).

Alyssa Thomas grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds, two shy of her career-high (18).

Thomas had her second straight double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.

Connecticut had a season-high in points (80), rebounds (46) and assists (17).

The Sun had the advantage in second-chance points in today’s win, 14-4.
