NEWARK, N.J. — Nico Hischier, Timo Meier, and Connor Brown each tallied a goal and an assist as the New Jersey Devils edged the Detroit Red Wings 4–3 on Monday night, a meeting between two of the Eastern Conference’s top contenders.

Detroit’s scoring came from Alex DeBrincat, James van Riemsdyk, and Dylan Larkin.

New Jersey jumped out quickly, striking three times on just eight first-period shots to take a 3–1 lead. The fast start helped the Devils halt a three-game skid and earn their first victory in regulation since a 4–1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Nov. 1. Their previous four wins had all required overtime or a shootout.

Goaltender Jacob Markstrom turned in a strong performance for the Devils, stopping 32 shots, including 13 during a pressured third period.

Hischier continued his hot streak with his fourth goal in his last five outings and also assisted on Meier’s opening-period marker, giving him his 102nd career multipoint game with New Jersey.

Cody Glass, returning to the lineup after missing four games with an upper-body injury, broke a 1–1 tie with a first-period goal. He stepped in for Juho Lammikko on the Devils’ third line.

Van Riemsdyk, playing his 1,100th NHL game and returning to his home state, converted on the power play in the second to bring Detroit within 3–2. Moritz Seider contributed two assists as the Red Wings suffered only their second loss over their last seven contests.

Brown restored a two-goal cushion late in the second off a setup from Dawson Mercer, but Larkin responded early in the third with his 13th goal of the season to pull Detroit back within one.

Cam Talbot finished with 15 saves for the Red Wings.
