East Rutherford, NJ—The second day of the Giants’ training camp saw an impressive display of offensive prowess and sharp execution. Quarterback Daniel Jones was particularly noteworthy, connecting with rookie receiver Jalin Hyatt for a spectacular touchdown. Jones’s precision and confidence in the pocket were evident as he navigated through his progressions with ease, thanks in part to a solid performance from the offensive line.
Jones loked sharp on Thursday, the G-Men spent most of the camp working in the red zone. Jones was a little off, but he made some great throws to various receivers Thursday that fired up Brian Daboll, who called plays most of the offensive plays and probably will resume that duty during the season.
Jones got 23 reps and completed 9 of 13 passes.
The day also highlighted the emerging talent of rookie receiver Malik Nabers, who had an impressive showing against second-year cornerback Deontay Banks. Nabers repeatedly got the better of Banks, securing multiple touchdowns and demonstrating his ability to create separation and make plays downfield. TE Daniel Bellinger looked good working the middle of the field and catching balls in traffic.
In addition to Jones’s strong performance, backups Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito also saw significant action. Both quarterbacks delivered accurate throws and showed promising command of the offense, with accuracy being a standout trait in their reps. Overall, the Giants’ camp showcased a dynamic offense with promising contributions from both veterans and newcomers.
Jermaine Eluemunor, the newly acquired free agent who was taking first-team reps at right tackle, was accidentally struck by Lawrence, the Giants’ two-time Pro Bowl nose tackle, during the team’s first training camp practice. Although Eluemunor stayed on the ground for several minutes before leaving the field, tests later showed that he has bruised ribs.
“Not fun. Not fun at all,” Eluemunor said today. “It’s not the most fun thing I’ve had to deal with.
“I was trying to cut off, and Dex thought he was being trapped so he obviously lowered his shoulder and it just so happened that he lowered his shoulder into my rib cage. So, it wasn’t the most fun pain I’ve had to deal with but I’m out here today, so that’s what really matters.”
Daboll was asked if the offensive line is doing anything differently under new coach Carmen Bricillo.
“You’re talking about schematically?” Daboll said. “We’ve made adjustments throughout the offseason. There’s only so much you can do up front. A lot of people have the same protections and things like that, but you try to mix it up, and those guys have done a good job with the techniques, some of the individual techniques that Carm and (assistant line coach) James (Ferentz) have brought with them. It’ll be a work in progress just like all the positions are.”
