College Park, MD–In a highly anticipated NCAA Tournament matchup on Saturday, the Maryland Terrapins faced the Norfolk State Spartans at the Xfinity Center. In the first half of the game, the thirteenth-seeded NSU had their way with the fourth-seeded Terps in this amazing game.

NSU was led efficiently by guards Diamond Johnson and Anjanae Richardson, their quickness and basketball IQ were the key source to both sides in the first half. They were the reason why NSU took a 32-30 lead into halftime in front of the Terps’ large home crowd.

The second half started with UMD scoring the first six points and never looking back. With their size and experience down low, they were led by forward Allie Kubek and guards Sarah Te-Biasu and Kaylene Smikle. Shyanne Sellers made timely baskets when NSU made runs, cutting a 14-point lead to 7.

Their sharpshooting, particularly from beyond the arc, was instrumental in shifting the game’s momentum. Maryland’s improved ball handling in the latter half reduced turnovers, allowing them to establish a rhythm and control the pace.

Maryland’s head coach, Brenda Frese, acknowledged the challenge posed by Norfolk State, emphasizing the importance of second-half adjustments and the leadership displayed by her veteran players. The Terrapins’ resilience and strategic modifications underscored their readiness as they advance in the tournament with the final score ending 82-69.

UMD had four players in double figures and two players over 20 points just enough to hold off the galant effort by the MEAC champions Spartans.

Looking ahead, Maryland will face fifth-seeded Alabama in the second round on Monday, with a coveted spot in the Sweet 16 at stake. The Terrapins aim to build on their second-half performance and continue their pursuit of a national championship.
