Michigan Advances in NCAA Tournament After Narrow Victory Over UC San Diego

Denver, Co–In a thrilling first-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament’s South Region on March 20, 2025, the fifth-seeded Michigan Wolverines narrowly defeated the twelfth-seeded UC San Diego Tritons, 68-65, at Ball Arena in Denver.

Michigan started strong, opening the game with a 10-0 run and maintaining a 41-27 lead at halftime. Center Vladislav Goldin was instrumental in the first half, contributing 11 of his 14 total points.

The Tritons, however, showcased resilience in the second half though it took some time for them to revv up. UCSD shot the ball poorly but were able to hang around with Michigan’s problem protecting the ball. They initiated a 17-4 run, narrowing the deficit to one point at 45-44. Despite Michigan extending their lead to 56-46, UC San Diego continued to battle, eventually taking their first lead of the game, 65-63, with just over two minutes remaining.

Michigan’s Tre Donaldson responded by sinking a crucial three-pointer, reclaiming the lead at 66-65. In the final moments, Goldin secured the victory with two free throws, and UC San Diego’s last-second three-point attempt by Tyler McGhie narrowly missed, sealing the Wolverines’ advancement.

Goldin led Michigan with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Donaldson added 12 points and seven rebounds. Roddy Gayle Jr. also contributed 11 points.

For UC San Diego, McGhie delivered an impressive performance with a game-high 25 points. Forward Nordic Kapic chipped in with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists. Despite the loss, the Tritons’ effort in their inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance was commendable, reflecting their determination and skill.

With this win, Michigan improved to a 26-9 record and advanced to the second round, where they will face the fourth-seeded Texas A&M Aggies.

The Wolverines’ ability to withstand UC San Diego’s relentless comeback underscores their resilience and poise under pressure, qualities that will be essential as they continue their tournament journey.
