State College, PA—-No. 1 Penn State took down No. 3 Michigan 30-8 in its Big Ten home-opener at Bryce Jordan Center Friday night. It was the Wolverines’ first dual loss of the season.
No. 3 Michigan won two matches in the defeat at No. 1 Penn State; it was U-M’s first dual loss of the season.
Mason Parris ranked second at heavyweight beat No. 1 Greg Kerkvliet 3-1 on a late takedown and improve to 18-0 on the season and third top-10 win this season.
Jack Medley started the match with a 19-3 technical fall at 125 pounds over Gary Steen. He has won each of his last five dual matches this semester.
Michigan lost at the 133 and 141 pounds weight classes. Dylan Ragusin, ranked 12th nationally scored the first takedown against top-ranked Roman Bravo Young with a counter on the edge of the mat in the last 10 seconds in the first period but dropped, 4-2, as Young, the two-time defending NCAA champion got a takedown in the second and rode Raqusin out the third.
Cole Martin, ranked 23rd at 141 pounds, dropped a 7-2 decision to fourth-ranked Beau Bartlett on takedowns and riding-time advantage.
Penn State never looked back as it routed the defending Big Ten Champions Michigan at Bryce Jordan Center.
Penn State’s No. 1 Carter Starocci took the mat against Max Maylor at 174 pounds.
Starocci had three takedowns in the first and held a 6-2 lead by the end of the period.
Half-way through the second period, Starocci unleashed on Maylor, putting him on his back for a full six points. Staorcci’s pin extended Penn State to a huge margin over the Wolverines, 22-5.
With the match in hand, a top-10 battle at 184 pounds between Penn State’s No. 1 Aaron Brooks and Michigan’s No. 9 Matt Finesilver.
Two takedowns early gave Brooks an lead of 4-1 at the end of the first, and gave him momentum going to the second.
With an escape and two more takedowns of the match, Brooks began takedown clinic. The final period saw Brooks put the final touches over a top-10 opponent.
Max Dean came out of the gate at the 197 pound weight class with a takedown of Bredin Yatooma and another one to make it a 4-0 lead at the end of the period. In the second, he added three more points and continued to hold onto the shutout 7-0 in that period.
The third period saw Yatooma earning his first points of the night, but Dean ultimately pulled away for a 10-1 major decision.

The Wolverines (7-1, 2-1 Big Ten) will close out the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest at No. 25 Rutgers on Sunday (Jan. 22) at Jersey Mike’s Arena in Piscataway, N.J. The dual will be streamed live on B1G+.
No. 1 Penn State will be home Friday, Jan. 27th to close the weekend with a 8:30 P.M. contest with No. 2 Iowa will be live on the BIG10 Network.
