Ames, Iowa — No. 15 Iowa State (14-3, 2-3 Big 12) held off a late run by No. 21 Texas (13-4, 3-2) 79-70 in front of a crowd of 14,267 on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
UT dropped to 26-19 in the all-time series against Iowa State.
Texas has won four of the last six and eight of the last 11 contests against Iowa State.
Gabe Kalscheur came up big for the Cyclones leading the way with 22 points.
Kalscheur hit 6 of 12 attempts from downtown, including a pair of deep threes in the second half that secured Iowa State victory.
He brings so much defensively every night,” Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger said of Kalscheur. “He does so many winning things. I think when you do those aggressive things over and over, when you continue to stay in the gym and get shots, at some point it comes around for you.”
Texas committed a season-high 20 turnovers, and the Cyclones hit 56.9-percent from the hardwood on the afternoon.
The Longhorns opened the contest by scoring the first five points and holding Iowa State scoreless until the 16:13 mark. Andrew Jones long three gave UT an 11-7 advantage with 12:45 remaining in the half, but the Cyclones scored six straight points to take a 13-11 lead after Kalscheur hit a jumper at the 10:23 mark.
Marcus Carr jumper cut the lead to 26-22 with 5:47 left, before Iowa State sprinted out to an 8-0 run to build a 34-22 lead following another Kalscheur jumper at the 3:55 mark. UT answered with a 7-0 spurt over the next two-and-a-half minutes to trim the gap to 34-29 after a Brock Cunningham jumper with 1:24 remaining. The Cyclones scored four of the final six points to take a 38-31 lead into the half.
After a Carr trey cut the deficit to 43-36 at the 17:32 mark, the Cyclones scored eight-straight points to increase their lead to 51-36 following a Kalscheur three-pointer with 16:15 left in the game. Trailing 64-50 at the 7:54 mark, UT sprinted out to an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to trim the margin to 64-58 after a pair of Timmy Allen free throws with 5:37 remaining.
Texas narrowed the lead to five points (67-62) following a pair of Ramey free throws at the 4:17 mark, but never drew closer than that. Iowa State converted 60.9-percent from the floor (14-23), including a 6-of-12 mark from three-point range, over the final 20 minutes.
Tyrese Hunter chipped in 13 points for Iowa State.
Andrew Jones led Texas with 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Carr finished with 15 points.
“From our perspective, we had to come in here and win the game and we didn’t do that,” Longhorns coach Chris Beard said. “Obviously, turnovers were a big, big problem for us.”
Texas converted 55-percent from the floor (11-20), including a 4-of-9 mark (.444) from three-point range, in the first half.
UT surrendered opponent team season highs in field goal percentage (.569), three-point field goals made (10), assists (22) and steals (11).
“I just continue to stay confident with who I am,” Kalscheur said, “and enjoy it.”
