Newark, NJ–Seton Hall is coming off a huge 67-66 win against #15 UConn hopefully that win would jumpstart the Pirates to other signature wins. One thing for sure there are playing with a lot moxie and confidence the last four contests. But tonight, wasn’t the night for the Pirates. They will definitely burn this tape and move on as quick as possible.

The series with the Pirates dates back to 1956. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series with SHU, 22-13 with all but one of the contests coming after MU joined the Big East Conference in 2005-06. The Pirates opened the series with a 96-78 victory over the Golden Eagles on Mach 17, 1956 in MU’s first ever appearance in the NIT in New York. The next meeting wouldn’t come until 50 years later when Marquette joined the Big East.

Marquette (16-5, 8-2 Big East) beat Seton Hall (12-9 5-5 Big East) 74-53 on Saturday in front of 9,796 at the Rock in New Jersey. The Pirates looked ready to play coming out of the gate but then got hit with the turnover bug.

Kam Jones led Marquette with 22 points and three rebounds. Oso Ighodaro chipped in 18 points with six rebounds.

The Pirates ran their offense efficiently and sprinted out to a 8-0 run, got up 8-3 at the 16:34 mark. The Pirates played sloppy and turned the ball 13 times which led to quick transition baskets for MU. The Golden Eagles got up 22-17 at 7:33 mark Oso Ighodaro led the way with six quick points during that run.

MU went on 10-2 just before the break which gave them a 37-29 advantage going into the locker room with Jones leading the way for the Golden Eagles with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the half.

In the first half, the Golden Eagles shot 54.0% (15-28) from the floor and 28.6% (5-7) from beyond the arc. Marquette started to run their offense through Jones and made the Pirates pay for leaving him open to shoot.

SHU shot 57.9% (11-19) from the hardwood and 50% (3-6) from downtown in the first half, even though they shot the ball well they were a turnover machine in the half. Marquette scored 34 points on the Pirates’ miscues for the game.

In the second half,  Marquette went to work and got Ighodaro more touches. Ighodaro score five quick points and before you could blink your eyes, Seton Hall was down by 11 (50-36) with 15:46 on the clock.

Ighodaro’s mid-range jumper ignited a 13-3 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 53-36 lead with 15:15 remaining in the game. Jones capped the run with a deep three pointer from the top of the key.

Marquette led by as many as 22 points at 74-52 with 1:48 remaining left in the contest.

Kadary Richmond led the Pirates with 10 points and five assists. Seton Hall committed a season-high 25 turnovers.
