Metlife Stadium—The NY Giants shored up the interior of their defense today.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence agreed to a four-year, $90 million contract extension with the Giants, according to various reports. The deal comes with $60 million guaranteed.

Lawrence enters his final year of his rookie contract and was scheduled to make $12.4 million in 2023.

Giants’ general manager Joe Schoen made it clear a few times to the media that Lawrence and Barkley were high on their list of contract priorities. So he can cross one of them off his list.

“We’ve had great conversations with his agent,” Schoen said of the 2019 first-round pick. “He’s a great leader, great player. We’d like to have him here for a long time.”

The G-Men used the franchise tag to retain running back Saquon Barkley. Barkley refused to sign the offer and is training away from the team’s facility during the voluntary portion of the offseason schedule. Barkley is looking for a long term commitment from the Giants.

Lawrence has started 57 games since he was drafted 17th overall by the Giants from Clemson University and has been a stalwart in the middle of the Giants defense. He is getting paid now for all of his hard work.

Lawrence, 25, was a Pro Bowler in 2022 after recording a career-high 7.5 sacks and 28 quarterback hits. Lawrence earned a 92.0 grade from PFF in 2022, which was tied for second-best in the NFL, and his 92.4 pass rush grade led all interior D-linemen.

The 6-foot-4, 342-pound Lawrence is now the fourth interior defensive lineman to break the $90 million club in total salary, following the Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald, Tennessee Titans’ Jeffery Simmons and the Washington Commanders’ Daron Payne Lawrence’s $22.5 million average per year and his $90 million total value tie him with Payne for third-highest in each category.

Schoen and Brian Daboll are definitely shoring the defense to make up for last year deficiency; 2022 total defense: 358.2 (25th), Rushing: 144.2 (27th), Passing:214.0 (14th). These two are definitely are on the same page and so far they are pushing the right buttons moving this franchise forward.
