Columbus, OH—-In a lopsided matchup at the iconic Ohio Stadium, the Ohio State Buckeyes delivered a commanding performance, routing the Akron Zips 52-6. With a balanced offensive attack and a suffocating defense, Ohio State showed why they are a powerhouse in college football.
First Half: Establishing Dominance
The Buckeyes set the tone early, quickly taking control of the game. Quarterback Will Howard orchestrated an efficient offense, leading the team on a series of successful drives in the first half. Ohio State struck first with a methodical 75-yard drive capped off by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Howard to wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. The Buckeyes’ defense stifled Akron’s offense, forcing three-and-outs and turnovers that kept the Zips off the scoreboard.
By halftime, Ohio State had built a comfortable 17-0 lead, with running back TreVeyon Henderson adding a 5-yard touchdown run, and moments later blasted a 37-yard field goal.
Third Quarter: The Floodgates Open
The Buckeyes came out of the locker room with renewed energy, determined to put the game out of reach. The third quarter was a masterclass in offensive execution, with Ohio State scoring 21 unanswered points. Howard continued to show his poise and accuracy, connecting and utilizing all of his receivers. Carnell Tate (four receptions, 58 yards, one touchdown) and Emeke Egbuka (four receptions, 51 yards) also contributed in the air.
Not content with just dominating through the air, Ohio State’s ground game took over.  Judkins broke loose for a 52-yard touchdown run, shedding tackles and showcasing his speed. Just minutes later, on Akron’s ensuing possession, Gabe Powers intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a defensive touchdown, igniting the home crowd and pushing the lead to 38-0.
Fourth Quarter: Sealing the Victory
Despite the large deficit, the Buckeyes showed no signs of letting up in the fourth quarter. Coach Ryan Day kept the pressure on, and the offense continued to click. Backup quarterback Devon Brown entered the game but didn’t miss a beat, throwing a quick strike to receiver Carnell Tate for a 22-yard touchdown. The Buckeyes’ relentless defense forced another turnover, and Brown capitalized again, this time finding the tight-end for a 15-yard score, extending the lead to 52-0.
Akron finally managed to break through Ohio State’s defense late in the fourth quarter, avoiding a shutout with a 45-yard field goal followed by another, shorter kick in the closing minutes, making the final score 52-6.
Ohio State’s impressive victory over Akron was a statement of intent, showcasing their depth, talent, and coaching. The Buckeyes’ balanced offense and stifling defense proved too much for the Zips, who were unable to mount any significant challenge. With this commanding performance, Ohio State continues to build momentum as they aim for a successful season.
