Queens, NY — Former world No. 1s Naomi Osaka and Iga Swiatek delivered commanding performances at the U.S. Open on Monday, each punching their ticket to the quarterfinals and reminding fans why they’ve both held the top spot in women’s tennis.

Osaka looked sharp and in control under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, defeating American star Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2 in a highly anticipated matchup. The win marks Osaka’s return to the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam for the first time since 2021.

Meanwhile, top-seeded Swiatek shook off a slow start to dismantle Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1. After falling behind 3-1 in the opening set, the Polish star shifted gears, finding her rhythm and dominating the rest of the match.

“She came out hitting really fast,” Swiatek said of Alexandrova. “I just needed to find my rhythm. Once I did, I felt locked in and in the zone.”

Swiatek, chasing her second U.S. Open crown and a seventh Grand Slam title overall, will next face the winner of the Amanda Anisimova–Beatriz Haddad Maia match.

For Osaka, a semifinal berth will be on the line when she takes on either No. 11 Karolina Muchova or No. 27 Marta Kostyuk, who were scheduled to play later in the evening.

“I’ll wait and see who I get,” Swiatek said with a smile. “There’s no need to overthink it before they even finish.”

As both champions regain top form in New York, fans could be headed for a blockbuster finish at the year’s final major.
