Rogerio Amaral Breaks His Own Record At The Penn Relays

Philadelphia, Pa. –The South Carolina Gamecocks opened up the 127th addition of the Penn Relays on Thursday afternoon, competing in just four events on day one.

Rogerio Amaral was the only male to compete for the South Carolina Gamecocks and he left quite an indelible mark, breaking his own school record in the men’s 5000-meter run. The Portugal native ran 13:52.94 to finish eighth overall in the Championship division, creeping into the Top-48 qualifying times in the East Region.

Elena Kelety put together the best individual finish for the women’s side, placing seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in the Championship division, running 58.92. KD Young tossed 56.94m (186-10) in the Championship Hammer Throw to finish 11th, while Gabriella Gait-Smith set a new personal best in the women’s 5K with a time of 17:10.71 for the ninth-fastest mark in Gamecock outdoor history.

Carolina will return to Franklin Field for day two of the Penn Relays tomorrow with 12 events listed on the docket for the Gamecocks. The women’s distance medley relay team will begin action at 11:55 a.m.
