Piscataway- Rutgers avoided getting shut out in three straight games within the same season but Chris Ash still remains optimistic about his plan for his team.

The one thing you can say is that the team battles every game and they still believe in their head coach Chris Ash philosophy.

RU turned the ball over five times and changed quarterbacks to no avail in a 24-7 loss to Illinois in front of 42,640 on Homecoming at High Point Solutions Stadium.

“You get five turnovers in a game you and really have no chance to win a football game,” coach Chris Ash said. “That’s what it came down to. Every time we were in critical situations, shot ourselves in the foot.”

Illinois (2-4, 1-3) with the win over Rutgers (2-5, 0-4) remained out of the B1G10 basement. They are hoping this win will jumpstart their season.

The Rutgers offense just looked out of sync all game long; both quarterbacks had issues with bad snaps on critical 4th down plays. Both fumble plays came at critical times when Rutgers was moving the ball down the field.

“I feel like the game was there. There were a lot of plays left out on the field. Then again, it’s on us because we didn’t finish.” Rutgers wide receiver Andre Patton said.

Illinois’ first-half points a 5-yard touchdown pass from Chayce Crouch to Kendrick Foster came off a more hard to explain miscue after Rutgers droved the ball 62 yards on 12 plays.

The start of Rutgers woes facing a fourth-and-2 at the 27-yard line, Rutgers sent tight end Nick Arcidiacono across the formation in motion where he might have distracted quarterback Chris Laviano, who botched the shotgun snap cleanly and was tackled for a loss and RU missed a golden opportunity to put points on the board.

Rutgers went with Rescigno in the third quarter, who was 10-of-18 for 120 yards, had the same misfortune that Laviano identical conditions and circumstances. It seemed like 4thdown and 2 was a problem for the Rutgers quarterback.

Quarterback Chayce Crouch starting in place of injured starter Wes Lunt, Illinois game plan was to play an old fashion smash mouth type of football that RU use to play in the Ray Rice and Brian Leonard era.

The plan worked for the Illini because Reggie Corbin scampered off a 53-yard run to convert a crucial third-and-2 with a pitch right. Corbin waited for his blockers patiently and hit the crease when it the hole opened up.

Rutgers was the brunt of all the media attention all week long after gaining just 39 yards and two first downs both in the waning minutes of the four-quarter in a 78-0 loss to the Michigan Wolverines.

Rutgers was driving the ball and tried to make a game of it when Rescigno threw an interception that was returned 75 yards for a touchdown. That turnover deflated the RU team as well as it fans.

“I made a big point at halftime of talking to the whole defense about the importance of coming out and getting off to a fast start. Trying to get a three-and-out and get the ball back to offense. For whatever reason, it went just the opposite of that.”  Rutgers defensive coordinator Jay Niemann said.

With Rescigno at the helm, RU went three-and-out and turned the ball over on downs before breaking a scoreless streak of more than 177 minutes.

Rescigno showed some flashes with a jump pass and shoveled a three-yard touchdown to Arcidiacono to close the gap to 17-7. It was Rescigno first touchdown throw and Arcidiacono first touchdown catch as well.

Rutgers forced a three-and-out as Darius Hamilton garnished his first sack of the season. A pumped up Ash left the sideline to meet his defense halfway on the field.

Rutgers is looking for answers to jumpstart their season and find a way to energize its fan base. One thing for sure if Rutgers want to compete in the BG10 they have to find some answers on offense quickly. Hopefully next week travel to Minnesota will bring the Scarlet Knights some luck.
