East Hanover, NJ— Shabazz opened strong with an early touchdown and leaned on a stellar defensive performance to secure an 8-7 victory over Hanover Park in Friday’s Group 2 state semifinals.

“It starts with our defensive line,” said senior safety Omari Gaines. “They shut down the run game and force teams to rely on passing.”

Gaines, a Stanford commit and standout in Shabazz’s formidable secondary, played a key role in limiting Hanover Park’s offense. The Bulldogs’ defense, which has now held six opponents to eight points or fewer this season, was pivotal again. Gaines highlighted his performance with a third-quarter interception, one of several crucial stops that defined the game.

Shabazz set the tone early with a quick five-play drive, culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by Daveion Porter. On the ensuing two-point conversion, Porter executed a jump pass to Zaiden McDonald in the back of the end zone, giving the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead just 9:41 into the game.

Hanover Park answered in the second quarter with a determined drive, ending in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Joey Borrello to Joey Tantawi. Ryan Galioto’s extra point brought the Hornets within one, setting the stage for a defensive showdown.

The Hornets threatened multiple times, advancing into Shabazz territory on six drives and reaching the red zone on four occasions. However, the Bulldogs’ defense stood firm, stifling Hanover Park on five of those drives.

“When the offense struggles, the defense steps up,” Gaines said. “If one side makes a mistake, the other side fights to recover the ball and give us another chance.”

Game-Changing Moment

As the fourth quarter began, Hanover Park advanced to the Shabazz 20-yard line, poised to take the lead. But after the drive stalled, the Hornets opted for a 33-yard field goal attempt.

In rainy conditions, Galioto’s kick was blocked by McDonald, preserving Shabazz’s narrow lead. Hanover Park never threatened the end zone again, sealing the Bulldogs’ path to victory.

The win underscored Shabazz’s defensive dominance and their ability to thrive in high-stakes moments, keeping their championship hopes alive.
