Queens, NY — Juan Soto ended his power slump in emphatic fashion on Saturday, launching his first home run in over three weeks to help power the New York Mets past the struggling Colorado Rockies, 8–2, at Citi Field.
The victory added to Colorado’s historic woes. The Rockies dropped their 19th consecutive series to open the season — a Major League Baseball record. With a 9–49 mark, they also now own the worst record through 58 games in modern MLB history. Dating back to September of last year, Colorado has lost 22 straight series.
Early Offense, Loud Statements:
The Mets wasted no time jumping on Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela (1–10), plating four runs in the first inning. Brett Baty broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple, and Tyrone Taylor followed with an RBI single to cap the rally.
New York kept the pressure on in the fourth. Brandon Nimmo and Soto went back-to-back on consecutive pitches, electrifying the home crowd. Soto’s towering 404-foot shot was his first since May 9, snapping a 17-game stretch in which he had just two extra-base hits and a .143 average.
Fans showed their appreciation in the fifth inning, chanting “JUAN SO-TO!” from the right field stands. Soto turned and raised his arms in acknowledgment, soaking in the moment.
Jeff McNeil added the final blow in the eighth with a solo homer.
Senga Sizzles:
Kodai Senga (6–3) was masterful, limiting Colorado to two hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings. After giving up a first-inning homer to Ezequiel Tovar, Senga locked in and retired 17 consecutive batters — the longest streak of his MLB career — before issuing a walk to Tovar in the seventh. An RBI single by Thairo Estrada later chased Senga from the game.
Senzatela, meanwhile, became the first pitcher in the majors to reach 10 losses this season. He was charged with seven earned runs over four innings.
Stat of the Day:
The Rockies haven’t held a lead at the end of an inning since the first frame of last Sunday’s game against the Yankees — a stretch of futility now approaching a full week.
What’s Next:
The Mets and Rockies wrap up their weekend series on Sunday at Citi Field. New York will send right-hander Clay Holmes (5–3, 2.98 ERA) to the mound, while Colorado counters with lefty Carson Palmquist (0–3, 8.78 ERA)
