South Carolina Outrebounds Georgia For The Win 80-69

Athens, Ga. —Keyshawn Bryant poured in 22 points, Devin Carter chipped in 21 and South Carolina defeated Georgia 80-68 on Saturday at Stegeman Coliseum to snap a three-game losing streak.

The first half was fast-paced action with the Bulldogs going 6-of-8 from the hardwood. The fast start allowed Georgia to get an early 21-14 lead, but the Bulldogs couldn’t sustain that energy in the half.

“They are really good players, no question about it,” head coach Tom Crean said about the Gamecock duo after the game.

South Carolina(14-10, 5-7) went on a 20-0 spurt after the second media timeout, which was jumpstarted by Keyshawn Bryant and Devin Carter, in four minutes they took a 34-21 lead with around seven minutes left to the break.

The Bulldogs finished the first half on a 11-2 run led by Bridges and Oquendo to trim the lead to four points at the half, 42-38.

In their first game of this season on Jan. 22, South Carolina won 83-66 after coming back from a double-digit, first-half deficit. This time, they trimmed an eight-point disadvantage—- first-half hole with a 20-0 spurt on 7-of-10 shooting while the Bulldogs went 0 of 6 with four costly turnovers.

The Bulldogs came out hot in the second half, with a 7-0 run to take a 45-44 lead. However, the lead did not last long. With 11 minutes left in the game, Carter put South Carolina on his back and got his team up to a seven point lead.

The bright spots for the Bulldogs were Kario Oquendo, Braelen Bridges, and Jabri Abdur-Rahim, who combined for 36 of the 68-points for Georgia.

Oquendo scored 18 points, Bridges chipped in 16, Abdur-Rahim 12, and Aaron Cook 11 with with six assists for Georgia (6-19, 1-11), which lost its fifth straight.

This contest resembled the first meeting between the two, with the Gamecocks outplaying the Bulldogs in the second half to steal the win. South Carolina’s 3-point shooting in the second half of both games was key for the victories.

With the win, South Carolina swept the series series and has won 12 straight against the Bulldogs.

South Carolina, which leads the SEC with 13.6 offensive rebounds per game, was plus-5 in that category and outscored the Bulldogs 18-6 on second-chance points. The Gamecocks won the overall rebounding battle 41-27. They shot 52%, 10% better than the Bulldogs.

Georgia will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Feb. 16 to face off against LSU (17-7, 5-6).

South Carolina is at Ole Miss on Tuesday. Georgia is at LSU on Wednesday.
