Bronx, NY—The New York Yankees managed to avoid a World Series sweep by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 in Game 4 on Tuesday, keeping their hopes alive in the best-of-seven series. The Dodgers still lead 3-1, but the Yankees showcased a much-improved offensive performance after a slow start in the Fall Classic.
Having scored just seven runs in the first three games combined, New York’s bats came alive with an 11-run explosion in this match. Shortstop Anthony Volpe highlighted the game with a grand slam in the third inning, propelling the Yankees to a 5-2 lead that they would maintain for the rest of the night. Second baseman Gleyber Torres also made an impact with a three-run homer during a five-run eighth inning.
The game began with a familiar scene: Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, giving Los Angeles a quick 2-0 lead. Freeman has homered in every game of this series and has now recorded a home run in six consecutive World Series games dating back to 2021. Unlike Game 3, where Freeman also hit a two-run shot early on, the Yankees quickly bounced back this time.
In the bottom of the second, Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, narrowing the gap. Then, Volpe’s grand slam in the following inning put the Yankees ahead. The Dodgers fought back, scoring two runs in the fifth to bring the score to 5-4, but Yankees catcher Austin Wells answered with a solo homer in the sixth, followed by a flurry of runs in the eighth.

Yankees star Aaron Judge, a frontrunner for the AL MVP but struggling this postseason, contributed with an RBI single for New York’s final run—his first RBI of the series. Wells reflected on the team’s performance postgame, emphasizing the need for continued strong at-bats to sustain their momentum.
“Today’s success came from a lot of good at-bats and effectively working through their pitching staff,” Wells stated. “It’s going to take a lot.”
Luis Gil started for the Yankees, pitching four innings and allowing four runs. The Dodgers utilized a bullpen game, ironically employing fewer pitchers than the Yankees. Daniel Hudson, who surrendered Volpe’s grand slam, took the loss.
Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday in the Bronx, with Gerrit Cole set to start for the Yankees and Jack Flaherty for the Dodgers. Historically, no team has ever come back from an 0-3 deficit in the World Series, but Torres expressed confidence in Cole’s abilities.
“Gerrit is the best pitcher in the game,” Torres said. “We believe in him and what he can do, but we need to perform like we did tonight so we don’t place all the pressure on him.” The Yankees appeared poised and relaxed in Game 4, a significant change that they hope will carry them through the remainder of the series.
