Bronx,NY—Tuesday night, the New York Mets (52-48) stunned the New York Yankees (60-43) on the road, 3-2. Despite the Mets beating them in the previous two meetings they appeared in, some believed the Mets were just getting hot at the right time. That said, this win was a statement win assuring that the other two victories weren’t a fluke. Now, the Mets lead the Subway Series 3-0 and hope to make it 4-0 tonight.
The crowd never fails to support, in another sold-out fashion (13th of the season) whether they were in the blue and orange or in pinstripes the energy remained electric throughout the game.
“They got a good ball club,” Yankees All-Star Aaron Judge says after the game.
To start the game, the Yankees started their rookie pitcher, Luis Gill. Gill has proven to be effective all season, and nearly played a perfect game besides walking a batter for the Mets at the bottom of the fifth inning, ultimately allowing their first score of the game. Gill threw 91 pitches resulting in 54 strikes and only allowing one run.
As a result, the game remained stagnant until the bottom of the sixth inning. The play of the game, came from Mets left fielder Jeff McNeil securing a two-run homer. McNeil’s homer shifted the momentum of the game entirely and helped get others who were struggling at bat for the Mets going.
“Happy Jeff is good,” McNeil refers to his mood following the victory on the road.
This game was a thriller from start to finish, in fact in the closing minutes many believed the Yankees had a great opportunity to take control of the game. Only down one, the Yankees struggled to get on base as Mets Pitcher Jake Diekman closed. Despite walking Soto, Diekman managed to strike out, Ben Rice and Judge to win the game. Where can the Yankees Improve?
Last night, it appeared the Yankees found a hard time executing as a team or collective. That said, individual players performed well, but as a team, they were exploited in specific areas that played into their downfall. Some believed the Mets in the final innings of the game purposely walked Judge, however according to the Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, this wasn’t accurate.
Nonetheless, Mendoza takes nothing from the Yankees’ talented hitting potential, in fact he emphasizes how special of a group they are, yet he doesn’t admit to walking either Soto or Judge.
“I know that lineup very well…Judge is special. Soto’s special,” Mendoza emphasizes.
That said, in hindsight like many the Yankees took a moment and reflected on what they could’ve done differently to alter the outcome. Yet, Yankees pitcher Michael Tonkin who gave up the play of the game to McNeil shares that he would have switched his pitch up to help put his team in a better position.
“I mean hindsight, I guess the slider would have been a better option,” Tonkin said. “But the execution wasn’t there either. I’m trying to go up there, and it wasn’t up.”
What’s Next for the Yankees?
Wednesday night, they will play the final game to close out the Subway Series at home against the Mets again. The opening pitch will begin at 7:05 P.M. EST and will be filled with New York fanatics in one of the most anticipated match ups every season. The rivalry will continue for ages, however the Mets currently have the last laugh. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
