San Antonio, TX — Quarterback Owen McCown made history and UTSA made a statement Thursday night, scoring 31 unanswered first-half points to cruise past Tulane, 48–26, at the Alamodome. The win handed the Green Wave their first American Athletic Conference loss of the season and preserved the Roadrunners’ perfect home conference record under sixth-year head coach Jeff Traylor.

With the victory, UTSA improved to 4–4 (2–2 AAC) and extended its home conference streak to 22–0, with an overall home record of 32–4 since Traylor’s arrival — one of the nation’s best marks.

McCown’s Record-Breaking Night

McCown was nearly flawless, completing 31 of 33 passes for 370 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He broke the school record for consecutive completions, hitting 16 straight to surpass the previous mark of 13 set by program legend Frank Harris in 2019.

The Roadrunner defense was equally impressive, forcing four turnovers to keep Tulane off balance all night.

A First-Half Avalanche

Tulane struck first with a one-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Jake Retzlaff, though the Green Wave failed on a two-point attempt, taking an early 6–0 lead.

UTSA quickly responded. A 44-yard strike from McCown to tight end Patrick Overmeyer set up a two-yard touchdown run by David Amador II, giving the Roadrunners a 7–6 edge. Moments later, safety Jimmy Wyrick recovered a fumble forced by Tyan Milton, setting up a 34-yard field goal by Michael Petro to make it 10–6.

From there, UTSA erupted for 31 unanswered points. Receiver Devin McCuin hauled in two touchdowns — the first a highlight-reel catch in the corner of the end zone, and the second off a trick play when Amador, a former high school quarterback, threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to him. Amador then caught a 14-yard scoring pass of his own, stretching the lead to 31–6. McCuin finished with eight receptions for 96 yards.

Tulane finally broke through before halftime when Zycarl Lewis Jr. caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Retzlaff, but another failed two-point try left them trailing 31–12 at the break.

Roadrunners Keep Rolling

UTSA opened the second half with a bang as Will Henderson III took a handoff 29 yards to the house, extending the lead to 38–12. Tulane tried to answer with some trickery of its own — wideout Jimmy Calloway threw a 42-yard touchdown to Omari Hayes — but the Roadrunners’ lead was never in doubt.

Henderson added another touchdown late in the fourth quarter, a 17-yard sprint to the end zone, sealing the win. On the next possession, Milton intercepted Tulane quarterback Brendan Sullivan at midfield to deliver the final blow.

Traylor’s Plea for Support

After the game, Traylor used the national primetime spotlight to deliver a passionate message — calling for more financial backing for the program amid the growing challenges of college football’s NIL era.

“The loyal fans, the true supporters who’ve been there since day one — that’s who we play for,” Traylor said. “The chirping birds, we don’t give a crap about. We shut them up for a week. The negativity these kids have gotten is unbelievable.”

Traylor’s message grew more direct as he emphasized the need for greater investment:

“People love to say, ‘Do more with less,’ but it’s impossible. We’ve got to have help. I’m going to use this platform to ask for help.”
