Villanova Dismantles Georgetown 80-48 In The Big East

Madison Square Garden —Georgetown left their hearts and minds in DC, they definitely weren’t close to New York City.

Villanova Cam Whitmore scored 19 points and grabbed 10 boards in Villanova’s 80-48 win over Georgetown on Wednesday night in the first round of the Big East Conference Tournament.

In the first half Villanova came out the locker room hitting buckets. The Cats ran off 14-0 spurt for five minutes starting around the 15-minute mark. Villanova shot 8-16 from beyond the arc in the that half, including Justin Moore shooting 4-6 from downtown, the Hoyas shot a dismal 34.6% from the floor (9-26 FG, 1-5 3PT). Akok Akok did not play and Bradley Ezewiro (2-2) got the start at center with a bad first-half shooting by Bryson Mozone (0-1), Jay Heath (0-4), Primo Spears (4-8) and Brandon Murray (2-6).

With the win, Villanova advances to the second round with a record of 17-15.

The Hoyas could not contain a hot-shooting sixth-seeded Villanova squad as the #11 Georgetown men’s basketball team was steam rolled by the Wildcats. With the loss, Georgetown concludes its season with an overall record of 7-25.

Villanova led going into intermission 41-20 with their largest halftime lead this season, the Hoyas’ lowest intermission point score (tied with the Seton Hall game). The Wildcats won the first-half rebound (19-11), points on the blocks (14-10), bench points (9-2), turnovers (5-3), and points off turnovers (9-4) battles.

Justin Moore poured in 13 points with four 3-pointers for the sixth-seeded Wildcats, who will play third-seeded Creighton in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Brandon Slater, Brendan Hausen, Mark Armstrong chipped in 10 points apiece.

Primo Spears scored 17 points, seven assists, and two steals for the 11th-seeded Hoyas (7-25). Jay Heath chipped in eight points and eight boards for the Hoyas. Brandon Murray also finished with eight points.
