Los Angeles—The USC baseball team lost in the series-opener against the Washington Huskies on Friday night, 2-1 in a pitcher’s duel at home.

With the loss, the Trojans fall to 24-23 overall and 8-17 in the Pac-12, while the Huskies improve to 23-24 overall and 12-16 in conference play.

USC fell behind in the third when Colby Wallace led off with a grounder to the second baseman and he made the play for out number one. Josh Urps followed with a ball that almost cleared the wall in right, but it bounced off the fielder’s glove as he collided with the wall. Urps sprinted around the bases arriving safely at third. McKay Barney followed with a grounder to second that brought Urps across the plate to put Washington up 1-0. Cam Clayton smashed a grounder to the pitcher to send things to the bottom half.

The Trojans came back to tie the game in the fifth when Rhylan Thomas bunted home Johnny Olmstead to make it a 1-1 contest. The Trojan offense stalled after that. USC left 10 men on bases in the game.

A.J. Guerrero hit a solo blast in the eighth to put the Huskies up for good.

Jaden Agassi tossed 5.1 innings in the start, scattering eight hits and giving up one run. Carson Lambert took the L after 2.2 relief innings and Kyle Wisch tossed a scoreless ninth.

Starter Husky pitcher Jared Engman had a solid outing going 5.1 innings, giving up just 1 run on 5 hits with 1 walk and 5K’s. Ryan Velazquez got the win moving to 2-0. He went 2/3rds of an inning, giving up no runs, hits, walks, or strikeouts. Stefan Raeth got the save – his third.  He pitched two complete innings holding the Trojans scoreless with just 1 hit, no walks, and 3K’s.
