New York, NY—–The Carolina Hurricanes may not have showcased their best performance in Game 3 against the New York Islanders, but they managed to secure a crucial win, putting them just one victory away from advancing to the second round.

Defensemen Brent Burns and Dmitry Orlov ignited the Hurricanes with early goals, setting the tone for their 3-2 victory on Thursday night and securing a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Sebastian Aho also contributed to Carolina’s offensive efforts, while Andrei Svechnikov provided two assists. Frederik Andersen stood tall in the net, stopping 29 shots and playing a pivotal role in the Hurricanes’ triumph. The victory marked Carolina’s eighth win in nine games at UBS Arena since its opening in the 2021-22 season.

Reflecting on the game, Svechnikov acknowledged that the Hurricanes didn’t play their usual style but emphasized the importance of securing the win and moving forward.

While the Islanders managed to find the back of the net through goals by Brock Nelson and Pierre Engvall, they now find themselves on the brink of elimination, trailing Carolina 3-0 in the series.

Ilya Sorokin started in goal for the Islanders but was pulled in the second period after surrendering three goals on 14 shots. Semyon Varlamov replaced him and made eight saves to keep the Islanders within striking distance.

Despite a spirited effort from the Islanders in the third period, during which they outshot Carolina 11-3, they couldn’t find the equalizing goal. Andersen’s stellar goaltending, including impressive saves while falling backward and sitting on the ice, proved decisive in preserving Carolina’s lead.

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour commended Andersen’s performance, highlighting his consistency and composure throughout the game.

With Game 4 looming on Saturday in New York, the Islanders face an uphill battle as they seek to stave off elimination and force a decisive Game 5.

The Hurricanes’ victory was tempered by the absence of defenseman Brett Pesce, sidelined due to a lower-body injury suffered in Game 2. Tony DeAngelo filled in admirably in his absence, partnering with Brady Skjei on the blue line.
