Wake Forest Smothers Georgia Tech At the McCamish Pavilion 80-51

Atlanta, GA — Cameron Hildreth poured in 17 points, Andrew Carr put up a double-double and Wake Forest stepped on the gas early, beating Georgia Tech 80-51 on Tuesday night.

The Deacon Deacons has won consecutive games — both by 29 points — after beating the Orangemen 99-70 on Saturday.

The Demon Deacons improved to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the ACC to give them a boost for their NCAA Tournament chances. The Demon Deacons broke a four-game road losing streak.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 10-13 overall and 3-9 in the ACC and are 6-6 at home this season.

“I think we shared the ball and we communicated as a team,”  Wake Efton Reid said. “Most importantly on the defensive side we got a lot of kills in the first half and in the second half. That’s always a positive plus for us.”

Georgia Tech took a 61-27 lead five minutes into the second half on a Sallis bunny. After a sizzling first half the Demon Deacons continued to play well scoring five of their first seven shots in the second half of the frame. The Yellow Jackets were shooting just 19% as they fell into the 34-point deficit.

Wake Forest’s extending defense played a significant role as the Yellow Jackets only scored eight points in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Carr had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Kevin Miller poured in 13, coming off the bench Damari Monsanto had 11 points and Hunter Sallis and Efton Reid III chipped in 10 apiece for the Demon Deacons.

Coach Steve Forbes said after the game: “We were locked in,” he said.

For the contest the Yellow Jackets shot just 28% making 17 of 60 shots. The Demon Deacons shot 46% from the field and were a perfect 17 for 17 from the foul line

Baye Ndongo poured in 14 points and Naithan George chipped in 12 for the Yellow Jackets (10-13, 3-9), who shot 28.3% (17 for 60) from the court including 12.5% (3 for 24) from 3-point range.

The Demon Deacons had just eight turnovers and had 17 assists on their 29 baskets.

“We got open shots on our terms,” Forbes said about his free-flowing offense. “I thought our guys came off the ball well and shared it really well. All in all, it was a really, really good game, and a really good effort by everybody on our team.”

Kowacie Reeves Jr.’s only points of the contest came 59 seconds in when he drained a deep 3-pointer, giving Georgia Tech’s only lead of the game. The Demon Deacons proceeded to go on a 23-0 spurt while Wake Forest missed 23 of its first 24-shot attempts.

Wake Forest will try to continue its winning trend when it play North Carolina State on Saturday.

Georgia Tech, which has lost two straight and five of six games, will try to redeem itself when it travels to Louisville on Saturday.
