Brooklyn, NY – Duke’s journey through the NCAA Tournament will demand a stronger contribution from Kyle Filipowski, as evidenced in their recent match against Vermont.

In a game where Jared McCain and Mark Mitchell led the scoring charge with 15 points each, Duke struggled initially before securing a 64-47 victory over Vermont. Jeremy Roach added 14 points to the tally for the Blue Devils (25-8), who managed to advance despite Filipowski, their standout player, having a quiet night with just one shot and three points in nearly 37 minutes. However, Filipowski did showcase his prowess in rebounding with 12 boards, along with contributing four assists.

“We did what was necessary for the team to secure the win,” Filipowski remarked after the game.

Next up, Duke faces James Madison in the South Region second-round game, aiming for their 18th Final Four appearance and sixth national championship. James Madison secured their first NCAA Tournament win since 2013 by defeating fifth-seeded Wisconsin 72-61.

Vermont, the 13th seed, fought valiantly with Shamir Bogues leading the scoring with 18 points and Aaron Deloney adding 14. Despite their efforts, Duke’s defense and ability to capitalize on turnovers ultimately gave them the edge.

Duke Coach Jon Scheyer commended his team’s versatility and resilience, particularly highlighting Filipowski’s unselfish play and the team’s defensive efforts.

The game had its tense moments, including an injury to Vermont’s leading scorer, TJ Long, who left the court with a knee injury. Long’s departure left a somber atmosphere in the arena, with both teams and the crowd expressing concern for his well-being.

Duke played without Caleb Foster, sidelined due to a stress fracture in his right ankle. Despite missing Foster’s scoring presence, Duke managed to maintain control for much of the game.

As the tournament progresses, Duke will look to capitalize on their depth and defensive prowess to continue their journey towards a championship, but it won’t be an easy road.
