Prudential Center. — Goalie Jake Allen showcased his prowess with 36 saves, while Timo Meier and Dawson Mercer scored two goals each, propelling the New Jersey Devils to a commanding 5-2 triumph over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night at the Rock.

In a game marked by stellar performances, Alexander Holtz also found the back of the net, supported by assists from Jesper Bratt, Tomas Nosek, Jack Hughes, and Luke Hughes. This victory marked the Devils’ third win in eight games under interim coach Travis Green.

“We really emphasized our start, and I’m pleased with how we began tonight. It set the tone for a solid effort,” Green commented on the team’s performance.

Despite goals from Marcus Pettersson and Bryan Rust for Pittsburgh, the Penguins, like New Jersey, find themselves outside the playoff picture as the regular season clock winds down. Goaltender Tristan Jarry’s 33 saves couldn’t stave off their ninth loss in 12 games and the 11th defeat in 13 road outings.

Pittsburgh’s struggles against New Jersey extend to seven winless games (0-6-1) since February 24, 2022.

“We’re at the pinnacle of desperation right now,” remarked Penguins captain Sidney Crosby. “Our situation demands urgency and desperation. It’s about taking it one game at a time.”

Meier’s power play goal at 14:20 of the second period broke the deadlock, marking his 20th of the season and his ninth in the last ten games. This pivotal goal ended New Jersey’s 0-for-12 power play drought.

Although there was contention over Meier’s goal potentially involving a high stick, it was a non-reviewable call, leaving the outcome to the league’s judgment.

New Jersey surged in the third period, with Holtz and Mercer securing insurance goals just 16 seconds apart. Holtz capitalized on a rebound, notching his 15th of the season, while Mercer redirected Nosek’s pass for his 19th goal of the campaign at 9:14.

Allen stood tall, securing his second win in three starts for the Devils, boasting a .946 save percentage and halting 105 of 111 shots since his acquisition from Montreal on March 8.

“It was perhaps our most complete game to date,” Allen remarked. “We came out strong in the third period, stifling their momentum and executing with maturity.”

Green lauded Allen’s contributions, emphasizing the crucial role of goaltending, especially at this juncture of the season.

Mercer initiated the scoring at 5:35 of the first period with his 18th goal, countered by Pettersson’s equalizer at 7:16 of the second.
