NY Giants Selects Andrew Thomas With The No. 4 Pick

New York, NY–Giants GM Dave Gettleman was under a lot of pressure with tonight’s No. 4 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. The NY brass were pulled in two different directions because the G-Men need help on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

NY decided to draft Georgia’s Andrew Thomas No. 4 overall in the first round of the NFL Draft, landing the best left tackle and most dominating tackles in the 2020 class.

Thomas started 41 games at the position for the Bulldogs in three seasons: 15 at right tackle in 2017 and the next 26 at left tackle in 2018 and 2019.

“We spent a lot of time on this, and we want to fix this offensive line once and for all,” Gettleman said on a conference call. “Andrew has a hell of a pedigree. Three-year starter. He’s played big-time ball in front of a lot of people. He’s ready.

Thomas will be inserted on the left side of the line and will be a big part of Daniel’s development and growth in the NFL.

NFL Insiders talks about Thomas’ initial quickness of out his stance in pass protection. That he plays on the balls of his feet and with his knees bent, sliding quickly left and right to mirror edge rushers.

Gettleman has now selected a player out of Georgia in three straight Giants drafts as GM: third-round edge rusher Lorenzo Carter in 2018, first-round defensive back DeAndre Baker in 2019 and Thomas on Thursday night.

There weren’t any meaningful offers to persuade New York to trade out of their prime position in the first round.

“He’s big, he’s long, he’s strong, he can bend, he’s very athletic in the open field,” Gettleman said. “We’re really excited to have him and to continue to build this team properly.”

Thomas likely will not be the last offensive lineman taken by the G-Men in the draft. They have the No. 36 pick in the second round. Look for them to draft a center even Temple’s Matt Hennessy or Wisconsin’s Tyler Biadasz if available.
