New York, NY-At the 2020 NFL Combine Mekhi Becton ran a 5.10 second 40-yard dash which raised a few NFL scouts’ and GM’s eyebrows.
Becton, a 360 pound Louisville’s offensive tackle, moves with such speed, fluidity, agility, and athleticism. He is light on his feet especially for a man of his size and statue. A very physical player when he takes the proper angle to engage the defender.
After the NFL scouting combine his drug test was flagged. Becton was worried that his draft status would change from a honest mistake which he regrets til this day.
“It was just a messed-up drug test, you know,” Becton told the media Thursday night on a video conference. “I made a mistake, a young mistake that won’t happen again. It was a one-time mistake that’s never going to happen again.”
NY general manager Joe Douglas and company did their due diligence regarding Becton’s background, which included a long, one-on-one conversation with him on Wednesday. The Jets knew they had their man with Becton in the Big Apple.
The New York Jets filled a huge hole in Round 1 of the NFL Draft 2020 by drafting Louisville Mekhi Becton.
The Jets will try to draft a receiver in Round 2 with the No. 48 overall pick. They need a wide receiver to spread the field for Sam Darnold, but there are other critical needs that ranked higher on the Jets’ big board than wide receiver.
With Jerry Jeudy, (Alabama) Henry Ruggs III, (Alabama) CeeDee Lamb,(Oklahoma) and Jalen Reagor (TCU) all drafted, they will look somewhere to find a burner. Jets is salivating over Baylor’s Denzel Mims who is the top receiver available, according to the draft gurus. If need be NY would trade down and get more picks to strengthen their overall team needs.
Grade: B. Here’s the thing on Becton, he’s a freak athletically. He has a tendency to get really heavy which is a concern. He also has tendency to lean and not finish blocks out. If he can keep his weight in check and be dedicated to his craft, he’s going to be a good football player for Gang Green.
